WHY SCRAW?
Below are two sections; the one on the left shows the advantages of using traditional Scraw under thatch materials. The section on the right shows the more commonly used Saxon or 'tied on' method. Let's see how both fare when set alight...

THE FIRE HAS BURNT ALL OF THE THATCH BUT THE SCRAW IS INTACT AND HAS PROTECTED THE ROOF STRUCTURE. IF THIS WAS A REAL DWELLING IT WOULD STILL BE STANDING AND EASILY REPAIRABLE
THE FIRE HAS TOTALLY DESTROYED THE THATCH AND BADLY DAMAGED THE ROOF STRUCTURE. IF THIS WAS A REAL DWELLING IT WOULD HAVE BEEN DESTROYED COMPLETELY BY THE FIRE.
A unique historically correct, indigenous Irish thatching/building technique. A fire barrier technology thousands of years old. A Celtic warhorse who sleeps below the thatch, awoken only by fire. The protector of those who live underground!
The picture was taken at a Cottage that had been thatched for less than four years, before Thatcher Taggart rethatched it twelve inches thick, in Straw. A representative from the Historical Buildings D.O.E passed this abortion and a large grant was paid.
This picture with its plastic bags, and if you look closely at the cement flashing around the chimney, you will see the substandard depth at which the thatch was put on i.e. it was only about two to three inches deep. This roof when thatched to a substandard depth never had a chance of lasting.
This roof was passed by the Historical Buildings D.O.E and is a perfect example of my claims that they are incompetent, and through their policies, grant system and criminal incompetence are allowing the destruction of the Thatched Scraw roof.
